Description

These Air Fryer Mac and Cheese Balls are crispy on the outside and creamy on the inside, making them the perfect cheesy finger food. Easy to prepare and cook in an air fryer, they are a kid-friendly snack or party appetizer that can also be made ahead and frozen for convenience.

Ingredients

Scale

Main Ingredients

  • 3 cups cooked and chilled macaroni and cheese
  • 1/2 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 cups panko breadcrumbs
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon paprika
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Nonstick cooking spray or a light drizzle of oil

Instructions

  1. Mix cheeses and macaroni: In a large bowl, combine the cold macaroni and cheese with shredded cheddar and grated Parmesan cheese until evenly mixed.
  2. Shape into balls and freeze: Scoop out heaping tablespoons of the mixture and roll each into tight balls using your hands. Place the balls onto a baking sheet and freeze for 20–30 minutes to help them firm up and hold their shape.
  3. Prepare breading stations: Set up three separate shallow bowls: one with flour, one with beaten eggs, and one with panko breadcrumbs mixed with garlic powder, paprika, salt, and pepper.
  4. Bread the balls: Roll each chilled mac and cheese ball first in the flour, then dip into the beaten eggs, and finally coat evenly with the seasoned panko breadcrumbs.
  5. Preheat air fryer: Preheat your air fryer to 375°F (190°C). Lightly spray the fryer basket with nonstick cooking spray to prevent sticking.
  6. Air fry the balls: Arrange the breaded balls in a single layer in the basket without overcrowding. Air fry for 8 to 10 minutes, flipping them halfway through cooking, until they are golden brown and crispy on the outside.
  7. Serve: Serve the hot mac and cheese balls immediately with marinara sauce, ranch dressing, or your favorite dipping sauce.

Notes

  • Chilling the mac and cheese and freezing the balls helps them hold their shape during cooking.
  • You can prepare these ahead of time and keep them frozen until ready to cook.
  • For added flavor, mix in crumbled bacon or chopped jalapeños before forming the balls.
