Description

This Autumn Spiced Pear Crisp is a warm, comforting dessert perfect for fall. Featuring tender, cinnamon-spiced pears topped with a crunchy oat and almond crumble, it’s sweetened naturally with maple syrup and enhanced by fragrant spices like nutmeg, ginger, and allspice. A delightful treat to enjoy straight from the oven or with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.

Ingredients

Scale

Topping

  • 1/2 cup light brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup ground almonds (or any ground nuts or additional rolled oats)
  • 1/2 cup rolled oats
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 pinch salt
  • 5 tablespoons cold butter

Filling

  • 8-10 small pears, cored and thinly sliced (enough to tightly pack a 7×11 baking dish)
  • 2 tablespoons pure maple syrup (or more to taste)
  • 1/4 cup dried cranberries (optional)
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/8 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/8 teaspoon ground ginger
  • 1/8 teaspoon ground allspice

Instructions

  1. Make topping: In a medium bowl, combine the brown sugar, ground almonds, rolled oats, all-purpose flour, ground cinnamon, and a pinch of salt. Cut in the cold butter using a pastry cutter or your fingers until the mixture resembles pea-sized crumbles. Place the topping in the refrigerator to chill until ready to use.
  2. Make filling: Preheat your oven to 360°F (182°C). In a 7×11-inch baking dish, add the thinly sliced pears, pure maple syrup, dried cranberries (if using), ground cinnamon, nutmeg, ground ginger, and allspice. Toss everything gently to evenly coat the pears and distribute the spices and cranberries throughout.
  3. Bake: Evenly sprinkle the chilled topping mixture over the pear filling in the baking dish. Place the dish in the preheated oven and bake for 30 to 40 minutes, or until the filling is bubbly and the topping turns a golden brown. Once baked, remove from the oven and let the crisp rest on a cooling rack for 10 minutes before serving to allow the juices to set.

Notes

  • For extra flavor, serve warm with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.
  • You can substitute the ground almonds with more rolled oats or different ground nuts based on preference or allergies.
  • Adjust the sweetness by adding more or less maple syrup according to taste.
  • Store leftovers covered in the refrigerator and reheat gently before serving.
  • This recipe can be made with other fall fruits like apples or a mix of pears and apples.
