Description

This hearty Cheese Ravioli with Sausage recipe combines tender cheese-filled ravioli with a savory Italian sausage and marinara sauce. Cooked together in a skillet, it’s an easy one-pan meal perfect for busy weeknights, topped with melted Italian blend cheese and fresh basil for extra flavor.

Ingredients

Scale

Protein and Dairy

  • 1 pound Italian sausage (hot or sweet, casings removed)
  • 18 ounces cheese ravioli (1 package, recommended Buitoni Tomato & Mozzarella)
  • ½ cup shredded Italian blend cheese

Produce and Fresh Herbs

  • 2 cloves garlic (minced)
  • ¼ cup chopped fresh basil

Pantry Staples

  • 2 teaspoons olive oil
  • 15 ounces marinara sauce
  • 2 teaspoons Italian seasoning
  • Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper (to taste)
  • 1 cup low-sodium chicken broth (or water)

Instructions

  1. Heat Oil and Garlic: Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the olive oil and minced garlic and sauté for about 3 minutes until fragrant, being careful not to burn the garlic.
  2. Cook Sausage: Add the Italian sausage to the skillet. Cook for 3 to 5 minutes, breaking it up with a spoon until browned and cooked through.
  3. Add Sauce and Seasoning: Stir in the marinara sauce, Italian seasoning, and season with kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste.
  4. Add Broth and Ravioli: Pour in the chicken broth or water and add the cheese ravioli. Stir gently to ensure the ravioli is mostly covered by the liquid and sauce.
  5. Simmer: Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce the heat to low and cover. Let it simmer for 5 minutes.
  6. Finish Cooking Uncovered: Remove the lid and continue to simmer for another 5 minutes or until the ravioli is fully cooked, tender, and most of the liquid has absorbed.
  7. Melt Cheese: Sprinkle the shredded Italian blend cheese over the top and allow it to melt into the dish while still simmering.
  8. Add Fresh Basil and Serve: Remove from heat and scatter the chopped fresh basil on top before serving for a fresh, vibrant finish.

Notes

  • You can substitute sweet sausage for hot if you prefer a milder flavor.
  • Low-sodium chicken broth helps control salt but water can be used as a lighter alternative.
  • Covering the skillet during simmering helps the ravioli cook evenly and retain moisture.
  • Fresh basil should be added last to keep its bright color and aroma.
  • This dish can be made with store-bought or homemade cheese ravioli.
