Ingredients
Scale
Protein and Dairy
- 1 pound Italian sausage (hot or sweet, casings removed)
- 18 ounces cheese ravioli (1 package, recommended Buitoni Tomato & Mozzarella)
- ½ cup shredded Italian blend cheese
Produce and Fresh Herbs
- 2 cloves garlic (minced)
- ¼ cup chopped fresh basil
Pantry Staples
- 2 teaspoons olive oil
- 15 ounces marinara sauce
- 2 teaspoons Italian seasoning
- Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper (to taste)
- 1 cup low-sodium chicken broth (or water)
Instructions
- Heat Oil and Garlic: Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the olive oil and minced garlic and sauté for about 3 minutes until fragrant, being careful not to burn the garlic.
- Cook Sausage: Add the Italian sausage to the skillet. Cook for 3 to 5 minutes, breaking it up with a spoon until browned and cooked through.
- Add Sauce and Seasoning: Stir in the marinara sauce, Italian seasoning, and season with kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste.
- Add Broth and Ravioli: Pour in the chicken broth or water and add the cheese ravioli. Stir gently to ensure the ravioli is mostly covered by the liquid and sauce.
- Simmer: Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce the heat to low and cover. Let it simmer for 5 minutes.
- Finish Cooking Uncovered: Remove the lid and continue to simmer for another 5 minutes or until the ravioli is fully cooked, tender, and most of the liquid has absorbed.
- Melt Cheese: Sprinkle the shredded Italian blend cheese over the top and allow it to melt into the dish while still simmering.
- Add Fresh Basil and Serve: Remove from heat and scatter the chopped fresh basil on top before serving for a fresh, vibrant finish.
Notes
- You can substitute sweet sausage for hot if you prefer a milder flavor.
- Low-sodium chicken broth helps control salt but water can be used as a lighter alternative.
- Covering the skillet during simmering helps the ravioli cook evenly and retain moisture.
- Fresh basil should be added last to keep its bright color and aroma.
- This dish can be made with store-bought or homemade cheese ravioli.
