Description

This Easy 20 Minute Turkey Bolognese is a quick, flavorful, and healthy twist on the classic Italian meat sauce. Made with lean ground turkey, rich tomatoes, fresh basil, and Italian seasoning, it comes together rapidly for a satisfying weeknight meal served over your favorite pasta.

Ingredients

Scale

For the Bolognese Sauce

  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 1 pound ground turkey
  • 1 (28 fluid ounce) can diced tomatoes with juices
  • 1 (7.2 fluid ounce) can tomato sauce
  • 2 dashes Italian seasoning
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/4 cup fresh basil, packed and chopped
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

For Serving

  • Pasta of choice (quantity per package directions)
  • Parmesan cheese, freshly grated (optional)

Instructions

  1. Cook Pasta: Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add pasta and cook according to package directions until al dente. Drain and set aside.
  2. Sauté Onion: Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Add chopped onion and sauté for about 5 minutes until translucent and softened.
  3. Cook Turkey: Add ground turkey to the skillet with onions. Cook for approximately 5 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the meat is browned and no longer pink.
  4. Add Sauce Ingredients and Simmer: Stir in diced tomatoes with juices, tomato sauce, Italian seasoning, minced garlic, and chopped basil. Increase heat to medium-high until the mixture starts to bubble, then reduce heat to medium. Let it simmer gently for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  5. Serve: Plate the cooked pasta and ladle the turkey bolognese sauce over it. Sprinkle with freshly grated Parmesan cheese if desired. Enjoy immediately.

Notes

  • For a richer flavor, you can add a splash of red wine when adding the tomatoes.
  • Fresh basil can be substituted with 1 teaspoon dried basil if fresh is not available.
  • To make this dish gluten-free, use gluten-free pasta.
  • Leftover sauce can be refrigerated for up to 3 days or frozen for up to 2 months.
  • Adding a pinch of red pepper flakes can add a nice spicy kick.
