Description

A flavorful and quick Asian-inspired stir-fry combining crispy Brussels sprouts with savory sausage, enhanced by aromatic five-spice powder and a tangy hoisin-soy sauce mixture. This dish is perfect for a satisfying weeknight meal and can be served over rice, noodles, or cauliflower rice.

Ingredients

Scale

Vegetables

  • 1 pound Brussels sprouts, trimmed and halved
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon fresh ginger, grated
  • Chopped green onions, for garnish
  • Toasted sesame seeds, for garnish

Protein

  • 12 oz fully cooked sausage (chicken, pork, or plant-based), sliced into coins

Sauce and Seasoning

  • 2 tablespoons avocado or vegetable oil
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon hoisin sauce
  • 1 teaspoon Chinese five-spice powder
  • 1 teaspoon rice vinegar
  • 1/2 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes (optional)
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Cook the Sausage: Heat 1 tablespoon of oil in a large skillet or wok over medium-high heat. Add the sliced sausage and cook until browned and slightly crispy, about 4–5 minutes. Remove the sausage from the pan and set aside.
  2. Sear the Brussels Sprouts: Add the remaining oil to the pan, then place the Brussels sprouts cut side down. Cook undisturbed for 3–4 minutes to allow a deep brown sear. Stir the sprouts and continue sautéing for an additional 2–3 minutes until just tender.
  3. Add Aromatics: Stir in the minced garlic and grated ginger, cooking for about 30 seconds until fragrant, being careful not to burn.
  4. Combine and Sauce: Return the cooked sausage to the pan. In a small bowl, whisk together soy sauce, hoisin sauce, Chinese five-spice powder, rice vinegar, and red pepper flakes. Pour this sauce mixture over the Brussels sprouts and sausage, stirring well to evenly coat the ingredients.
  5. Finish Cooking and Garnish: Cook for another 1–2 minutes to heat everything through and allow the flavors to meld. Remove from heat and garnish with chopped green onions and toasted sesame seeds before serving.

Notes

  • Serve over steamed rice, cauliflower rice, or noodles for a heartier meal.
  • Use hot Italian sausage for additional spice or a plant-based sausage for a vegetarian option.
  • For a gluten-free version, substitute tamari for soy sauce and ensure sausage is gluten-free.
  • Adjust crushed red pepper flakes according to your heat preference.
