Ingredients
Scale
Protein
- 1 lb smoked sausage or Andouille sausage, sliced
- 1 lb shrimp, peeled and deveined
Vegetables
- 1 medium head of cabbage, shredded
- 1 small onion, chopped
- 1 bell pepper, chopped (optional)
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
Seasonings & Others
- 2 tbsp olive oil or butter
- 1 tsp smoked paprika
- 1/2 tsp cayenne pepper (optional for heat)
- 1 tsp onion powder
- 1/2 tsp salt (or to taste)
- 1/4 tsp black pepper
- 1 tbsp apple cider vinegar (optional for tang)
- Fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)
Instructions
- Prepare the Ingredients: Slice the sausage into rounds, peel and devein the shrimp, and chop the cabbage, onion, and bell pepper (if using). Mince the garlic carefully to ensure even cooking and flavor release.
- Cook the Sausage: Heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil or butter in a large skillet or Dutch oven over medium heat. Add the sliced sausage and cook for about 4-5 minutes until browned and crispy on the edges. Remove the sausage from the skillet and set it aside to maintain its texture.
- Cook the Shrimp: In the same skillet, add the shrimp and cook for 2-3 minutes on each side until they turn pink and are cooked through. Be careful not to overcook to keep them tender. Remove the shrimp and set aside with the sausage.
- Sauté the Vegetables: Add the remaining 1 tablespoon of olive oil or butter to the same skillet. Add the chopped onion, bell pepper (if using), and minced garlic. Sauté for 2-3 minutes until the onion becomes translucent and fragrant, which builds a strong flavor base for the dish.
- Cook the Cabbage: Add the shredded cabbage to the skillet with the onions and garlic. Stir to combine and season with smoked paprika, cayenne pepper (if using), onion powder, salt, and black pepper. Cook for 8-10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the cabbage is tender and slightly caramelized, enhancing its natural sweetness.
- Combine the Sausage and Shrimp: Return the cooked sausage and shrimp to the skillet with the cabbage. Stir everything together to blend the flavors.
- Add Vinegar (Optional): For a tangy twist, stir in 1 tablespoon of apple cider vinegar at this stage to brighten the flavors.
- Serve and Garnish: Garnish the dish with fresh chopped parsley. Serve immediately to enjoy the warm, savory flavors.
- Enjoy: Dig into this savory and comforting Fried Cabbage with Shrimp and Sausage!
Notes
- You can substitute smoked sausage with Andouille or kielbasa for a similar smoky flavor.
- The bell pepper is optional but adds color and sweetness to the dish.
- Adjust cayenne pepper according to your heat preference or omit for a milder taste.
- Use apple cider vinegar sparingly as it adds brightness but can overpower the dish if overused.
- For a lower fat version, use olive oil instead of butter or reduce the amount of oil used.
- Make sure not to overcook shrimp to keep them tender.
- Leftovers can be refrigerated for up to 3 days and reheated gently on the stovetop.
