Ingredients
Scale
Halloumi and Cooking
- 225-250g (8oz) halloumi block (Cyprus made PDO stamped recommended)
- 2 tbsp olive oil
Flavoring
- 1 1/2 tbsp honey (or substitute maple syrup)
- 1/2 tsp fresh thyme leaves with tiny sprigs
- 2-3 pinches chili flakes (red pepper flakes), optional
Instructions
- Prepare the Halloumi: Slice the halloumi block into thick slices, about 1 cm thick, ensuring they hold together well for frying.
- Heat the Oil: In a medium skillet or frying pan, heat the olive oil over medium heat until shimmering but not smoking.
- Fry the Halloumi: Carefully place the halloumi slices in the hot oil. Fry for about 2-3 minutes on each side or until they develop a golden-brown crust and become slightly crispy.
- Add Honey and Thyme: Reduce the heat to low. Drizzle the honey evenly over the fried halloumi slices. Sprinkle the fresh thyme leaves and tiny sprigs on top to infuse an aromatic flavor.
- Optional Chili Kick: If desired, sprinkle 2-3 pinches of chili flakes over the halloumi for a subtle heat contrast with the sweetness.
- Serve Warm: Remove the halloumi from the pan and transfer to a serving plate. Serve immediately for the best texture and flavor.
Notes
- Halloumi is best when freshly fried; reheating may make it rubbery.
- You can substitute honey with pure maple syrup for a vegan alternative.
- Adjust chili flakes to taste for desired heat level.
- Use Cyprus made PDO halloumi if available for an authentic flavor experience.
