Scale
Guacamole Base
- 3-4 avocados, scooped out and chopped
- 1/2 lime, juice only
- 1/2 teaspoon fresh ground pepper
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 cup fresh cilantro, chopped (or 1 teaspoon dried cilantro flakes)
- 1-2 teaspoons tequila (optional)
Sautéed Onion and Garlic
- 1/2 sweet yellow onion, diced
- 1 teaspoon fresh garlic, minced (or 1 clove minced, or prepared garlic in jar)
- 1 teaspoon brown sugar
- 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)
- 1 tablespoon butter
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
Instructions
- Heat fats: In a skillet, heat 1 tablespoon of butter and 1 tablespoon of olive oil over medium heat.
- Sauté onion: Add the diced sweet yellow onion and cook until softened and translucent, about 5-7 minutes.
- Add garlic: Stir in the minced garlic and sauté with the onion for 1 minute to release its aroma.
- Add brown sugar: Sprinkle the onion and garlic mixture with 1 teaspoon brown sugar and cook for an additional minute to caramelize slightly.
- Cool onion mixture: Remove the skillet from heat and let the onion and garlic mixture cool to room temperature to prevent cooking the avocado when mixed.
- Combine ingredients: In a medium bowl, add the chopped avocados, lime juice, ground pepper, salt, cilantro, and tequila if using.
- Mash gently: Add the cooled onion and garlic mixture to the bowl and mash together gently, keeping some chunks of avocado for texture.
- Serve: Transfer to a serving dish and enjoy immediately with tortilla chips or as a topping for your favorite Mexican dishes.
Notes
- Using prepared garlic from a jar is a convenient alternative to fresh minced garlic.
- The tequila is optional but adds a unique flavor dimension inspired by margaritas.
- For a spicier dip, include the optional red pepper flakes or add jalapeño.
- Adjust salt and lime juice to taste for desired tanginess and seasoning.
- Consume guacamole within a few hours for optimal freshness and to prevent browning.
