Description

Mummy Dogs are a fun and spooky Halloween appetizer featuring hot dogs wrapped in flaky crescent roll dough to look like little mummies. They bake to golden perfection and can be decorated with candy eyes or mustard/ketchup for a playful touch, making them perfect for kids’ parties or festive family dinners.

Ingredients

Scale

Main Ingredients

  • 8 hot dogs
  • 1 can (8 oz) refrigerated crescent roll dough or crescent dough sheet
  • 1 slice cheddar cheese, cut into thin strips (optional)

For Assembly

  • 1 large egg, beaten (for egg wash)
  • Candy eyes or dots of mustard/ketchup for decorating eyes
  • Nonstick spray or parchment paper (for baking sheet)

Instructions

  1. Preheat and Prepare Baking Sheet: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or lightly spray it with nonstick cooking spray to prevent sticking.
  2. Prepare the Dough: If you’re using crescent rolls, unroll the dough and pinch the seams together to form one sheet. Cut the dough into thin strips about 1/4 inch wide, which will serve as the mummy wrappings.
  3. Wrap Hot Dogs with Cheese (Optional): If you like, wrap a thin strip of cheddar cheese around each hot dog before wrapping with dough. This adds a melty cheesy layer inside the mummy dog.
  4. Wrap Hot Dogs with Dough: Wrap 2–3 strips of dough around each hot dog to mimic a mummy. Leave a small gap near the top of the hot dog to leave room for eyes. Tuck in the ends and press gently to ensure the dough stays secured during baking.
  5. Apply Egg Wash: Place the wrapped hot dogs on the prepared baking sheet. Using a brush, lightly coat the dough with the beaten egg to give the mummy dogs a golden, glossy finish once baked.
  6. Bake: Bake in the preheated oven for 12–15 minutes or until the dough is puffed and golden brown.
  7. Decorate Eyes and Serve: Allow the mummy dogs to cool slightly. Add candy eyes or use small dots of mustard or ketchup for eyes to complete the mummy look. Serve warm with your favorite dipping sauces.

Notes

  • Great for Halloween parties or fun family dinners.
  • Use mini hot dogs to make bite-sized mummy dogs, perfect for appetizers or snacks.
  • Serve with ketchup, mustard, or a cheese dip for dipping.
  • You can substitute candy eyes with small dollops of cream cheese mixed with black olives.
