Description

Indulge in the ultimate comfort food with this classic Patty Melt recipe. Juicy beef patties, caramelized onions, and gooey cheese are sandwiched between slices of rye bread, grilled to perfection.

Ingredients

Scale

For the patties:

  • 1 lb ground beef (80/20)
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper

For assembly:

  • 1 large yellow onion (thinly sliced)
  • 2 tablespoons butter (divided)
  • 8 slices rye bread
  • 4 slices Swiss cheese
  • 4 slices cheddar cheese
  • Optional: Thousand Island dressing or spicy mayo for spreading

Instructions

  1. Prepare the patties: In a medium bowl, mix ground beef with Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Form into 4 thin, wide patties slightly larger than the bread slices. Set aside.
  2. Caramelize the onions: In a skillet over medium heat, melt 1 tablespoon butter and add the sliced onions. Cook, stirring often, for 10–15 minutes until golden and caramelized. Remove from the skillet and set aside.
  3. Cook the patties: Wipe the skillet, then cook the beef patties over medium-high heat for about 3–4 minutes per side, or until cooked through and browned. Remove from the skillet.
  4. Assemble the sandwiches: Layer 1 slice Swiss cheese and 1 slice cheddar cheese on a slice of rye bread, followed by a cooked patty and a spoonful of caramelized onions. Top with the second slice of bread.
  5. Grill the sandwiches: Melt the remaining butter in the skillet over medium heat. Grill each sandwich for 2–3 minutes per side until golden brown and the cheese is melted.
  6. Serve: Slice and serve hot, with a side of pickles or fries if desired.

Notes

  • For added flavor, spread Thousand Island dressing or spicy mayo inside the sandwich before grilling.
  • Substitute the cheese types to your preference—provolone, American, or pepper jack all work well.
