Ingredients

Scale

Main Ingredients

  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • 1 pound ground chicken
  • 1 small yellow onion, finely diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon freshly grated ginger
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons hoisin sauce
  • 1 tablespoon rice vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon oyster sauce
  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil
  • 1 (8-ounce) can water chestnuts, drained and finely chopped
  • 2 green onions, sliced
  • Salt and black pepper to taste
  • 1 head butter lettuce or iceberg lettuce, separated into leaves

Instructions

  1. Heat the oil: In a large skillet over medium-high heat, warm 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil until shimmering.
  2. Cook the chicken: Add 1 pound of ground chicken to the skillet and cook for about 5 to 7 minutes, stirring and breaking it apart with a spoon until browned and cooked through.
  3. Sauté the onion: Add the finely diced small yellow onion and cook for another 2 to 3 minutes until the onion softens and becomes translucent.
  4. Add aromatics: Stir in 2 cloves of minced garlic and 1 tablespoon of freshly grated ginger; cook for 30 seconds until fragrant, being careful not to burn the garlic.
  5. Mix sauces: Pour in 1 tablespoon soy sauce, 2 tablespoons hoisin sauce, 1 tablespoon rice vinegar, 1 tablespoon oyster sauce, and 1 teaspoon sesame oil. Stir well to combine all the flavors evenly throughout the chicken mixture.
  6. Add crunch: Fold in the finely chopped water chestnuts from 1 (8-ounce) can and 2 sliced green onions. Cook for an additional 2 to 3 minutes until heated through.
  7. Season: Taste and season with salt and black pepper as needed. Remove the skillet from heat.
  8. Assemble wraps: Spoon the savory chicken mixture into individual butter or iceberg lettuce leaves, serving immediately for the best texture and freshness.

Notes

  • You can substitute ground turkey or plant-based crumbles to make this recipe vegetarian or alter the protein.
  • For extra texture and crunch, consider topping the filling with chopped peanuts or crispy rice noodles.
  • These lettuce wraps can also be served cold, making them a convenient option for meal prep and packed lunches.
